Wildfire Spreads Across Vegetation Near Perpignan in Southern France
The blaze started shortly after midday south of Perpignan, in the Pyrenees-Orientales department near the Spanish border. The affected area is located close to the Agulla de Font Coberta waterway and the Mas Palegry area.
Around 180 firefighters were mobilized to fight the fire, supported by approximately 50 emergency vehicles deployed by the Pyrenees-Orientales departmental fire and rescue service.
A Dash firefighting aircraft and two helicopters equipped for water-bombing operations were also taking part in efforts to prevent the flames from spreading further.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. local time (1230GMT), authorities described the situation as “non-stabilized,” indicating that the fire remained active and had not yet been brought under control.
The wildfire broke out as the Pyrenees-Orientales, Gard and Aude departments were placed under France’s highest wildfire alert level on Monday amid elevated fire risks.
The Pyrenees-Orientales has already experienced extensive wildfire damage this year, with roughly 5,000 hectares affected by fires. A significant portion of the burned land resulted from a major blaze in Trevillach on July 4.
