Syria's Leader Denies Military Intervention Plans in Lebanon

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa moved to quash speculation Saturday, flatly rejecting reports that Damascus intends to deploy military forces into neighboring Lebanon.

"What is being circulated about Syria entering Lebanon is completely untrue," al-Sharaa told a delegation from Damascus countryside, according to a state news agency.

On the contentious question of demarcating the Syrian-Lebanese border, al-Sharaa was equally dismissive of any near-term resolution, describing the matter as secondary given current realities on the ground.

"This is not a priority at the present time, especially in light of the crises in Lebanon and internal displacement of around 1.5 million people," he said.

— Lebanon Under Sustained Israeli Assault
Al-Sharaa's remarks come as Lebanon endures a relentless Israeli military offensive that has raged since early March, claiming over 3,700 lives, wounding more than 11,600 and forcing upward of 1.5 million people from their homes.

— A Border Long Left Undefined
The Lebanese-Syrian frontier spans approximately 375 kilometers of rugged terrain — mountains, valleys and open plains — with six land crossings but no formal markers or signage delineating the boundary between the two nations.

The issue of border demarcation has festered since both countries secured independence from France between 1920 and 1946, repeatedly surfacing as a source of diplomatic friction, sporadic armed clashes and persistent smuggling activity across the unmarked divide.
