France Moves to Dissolve Far-Right, Far-Left Groups

(MENAFN) France is preparing to ban two extremist organizations — one from each end of the political spectrum — government spokesperson Maud Bregeon announced Wednesday following the weekly Cabinet meeting.

The groups earmarked for dissolution are the far-right Identitarian organization Patria Albiges and the far-left Front de Rue, Bregeon told reporters, after Interior Minister Laurent Nunez formally put the proposals before President Emmanuel Macron during the session.

Patria Albiges presents itself as a platform for raising public awareness around immigration, insecurity, and what it terms "Islamism." The group has already drawn the attention of the justice system — eleven far-right activists linked to it were reportedly handed prison sentences ranging from four to eight months, according to a broadcaster.

Front de Rue, meanwhile, is an anti-fascist organization operating primarily in northern France, with a particular presence in Lille.

Wednesday's announcement follows direct action by Macron, who convened senior government officials in February to examine the state's legal options against violent extremist organizations. That meeting was prompted by the death of a French nationalist activist during clashes between far-left and far-right factions in Lyon — an incident that intensified pressure on authorities to act decisively against organized political violence on both sides of the ideological divide.
