France Urges Coordinated Global Response to Hantavirus Risk

(MENAFN) French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu on Tuesday called for tighter international collaboration following the hantavirus outbreak connected to the cruise ship MV Hondius.

In a message posted on X, Lecornu said, “I have asked the ministers to immediately strengthen cooperation with neighboring states and to push for closer coordination of the health protocols in place within the European Union and the Schengen Area.”

According to reports, he noted that France’s health minister had already been in contact with several European nations that welcomed passengers arriving from the MV Hondius in an effort to coordinate containment measures and exchange information on the public health actions implemented by French authorities.

“Breaking potential transmission chains requires the rapid sharing of information, decisions and feedback,” he added.

As stated by reports, hantavirus is an uncommon illness typically spread through infected rodents or exposure to their waste. However, the Andes virus strain tied to the current outbreak is also capable of human-to-human transmission.

The outbreak has so far led to 11 confirmed infections and three deaths, according to figures released by the World Health Organization.
