France Urges Israel to Unblock Gaza Aid, Warns of Catastrophic Conditions
Addressing the UN Security Council on Tuesday, France’s UN ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont said that despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the ceasefire in Gaza remains fragile and the humanitarian situation has shown little meaningful improvement.
He urged Israel to “lift all obstructions to the delivery of assistance” and to guarantee protection for UN staff and infrastructure, also stressing the importance of enabling medical evacuations through the World Health Organization.
Bonnafont noted that months after the adoption of a UN resolution supporting a US-backed peace framework, the situation on the ground continues to be severe, with limited progress in addressing urgent humanitarian needs.
He described the ceasefire as “precarious” and reiterated that the humanitarian conditions remain “catastrophic,” while expressing France’s expectation of “tangible improvements in the situation of the Palestinian people” in the next phase of efforts.
According to his remarks, such progress would serve as a foundation for broader reconstruction efforts and the restoration of governance in Gaza, including plans for a local administrative committee and the eventual return of the Palestinian Authority.
