France Advises Citizens to Leave Mali Immediately After Wave of Attacks

(MENAFN) France has urged its nationals in Mali to leave the country “as soon as possible” due to worsening security conditions, according to a statement from the French Foreign Ministry cited by reports.

The advisory follows a series of coordinated attacks by armed groups across several locations in Mali, including the capital Bamako, which have significantly heightened instability in the country.

As stated by the ministry, the security situation remains “extremely volatile,” and French citizens are being advised to take advantage of available commercial flights to depart while they are still operating. Those unable to leave immediately have been instructed to remain indoors, limit movement, and maintain close contact with relatives while strictly following local security guidance.

The warning comes in the aftermath of attacks carried out on Saturday by armed factions, including the Al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front, which targeted multiple cities across Mali.

According to official statements broadcast on national television, Mali’s transitional authorities confirmed the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara during the violence. The announcement was delivered by Gen. Issa Ousmane Coulibaly.

Reports indicate that one of the attacks involved a suicide bombing using a vehicle-borne explosive device aimed at the minister’s residence in Kati, a military town near Bamako. During the assault, Camara reportedly engaged attackers and managed to neutralize several of them before being critically injured.

He was transported to a hospital for treatment but later died from his wounds, according to officials.

The recent escalation marks one of the most serious security crises in Mali in recent years, amid an ongoing insurgency involving multiple armed groups operating across the region.
