France Stops Asylum Appeals for Iranians, Lebanese Over Security Risks
The National Court of Asylum indicated that the measure, introduced roughly ten days earlier, is aimed at preventing decisions that could deny protection to applicants amid rapidly deteriorating conditions in the region.
As the body responsible for reviewing rejected asylum claims from the French refugee agency, the court explained that the pause allows time to reassess cases in light of shifting circumstances in both Iran and Lebanon.
Its president, Thomas Andrieu, noted that European legal frameworks permit granting protection to individuals coming from areas affected by “indiscriminate violence,” where civilians face widespread danger regardless of personal circumstances.
The decision is intended to ensure that asylum seekers are not prematurely refused protection while instability in the region continues to escalate.
According to reports, the broader conflict has intensified since the United States and Israel began airstrikes against Iran on Feb. 28, resulting in more than 1,340 deaths, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states hosting US military facilities, leading to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and air travel.
At the same time, tensions have further escalated since early March, when Israel expanded its military campaign in Lebanon, carrying out strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs and other regions before initiating a limited ground operation in the south.
