France Authorizes Sale of Low-Grade Diesel Amid Middle East Oil Crunch

(MENAFN) France moved Thursday to ease mounting fuel pressures by temporarily authorizing the sale of diesel that falls below standard quality specifications — a direct response to supply disruptions stemming from the ongoing Iran war and the throttling of the Strait of Hormuz.

The emergency measure, formally published in the Journal Officiel, relaxes the cold filter plugging point from minus 15°C (5°F) to 0°C (32°F). In practical terms, the adjusted fuel risks becoming unusable in freezing conditions — a notable trade-off as France prioritizes supply continuity over cold-weather performance standards.

Under the terms of the decree, the burden of liability falls squarely on motorists: drivers will be held responsible for any resulting engine or filter damage, while distributors are legally required to notify customers of the specification change. All other quality benchmarks — including cetane index, sulfur content, and fuel cleanliness — remain unaltered.

The authorization arrives against a backdrop of punishing price increases at the pump. French diesel costs surged from approximately €1.7 per liter (around $1.97) in late February to nearly €2.2 (around $2.56) by late March — a staggering rise of almost 30% in under a month.

The price shock traces directly to the widening Middle East crisis. Since the US and Israel launched a coordinated military offensive against Iran on Feb. 28 — a campaign that has killed more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — Tehran has responded with sustained waves of drone and missile strikes against Israel and Gulf states hosting American military forces.

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz — through which approximately 20 million barrels of crude oil flow daily — has remained effectively choked since early March, driving shipping costs sharply higher and amplifying upward pressure on global oil prices with no immediate relief in sight.
